Most people ask this question because they want to compress their snare drum samples. The compressor is one of the most popular pieces in the audio engineer's toolkit, and it controls the dynamics by lowering the volume of louder parts while turning up softer passages. Compressors can be used as an effect on a single instrument or in chains across an entire mix. Why would you need to use a compressor on every track when mixing your music? In most cases, it's not necessary at all unless you are trying to tame really loud peaks that come from only one drum (say for example, if you recorded your snare track with too much proximity effect).
